Social Welfare Project: Sri Henepola Gunaratana Scholarship Trust
A project to support the education of rural children in Sri Lanka.
In 2005 Bhante Gunaratana traveled to Sri Lanka to survey the aftermath of the great tsunami. While visiting the hill country where he grew up he saw that although the people there were not directly affected by the damage of the tsunami, they were none the less economically disadvantaged. Especially in the area of childhood education. To remedy this problem he started the Sri Henepola Gunaratana Scholarship Trust. This organization is run by a board of directors in Sri Lanka made up of local monks and lay people. Bhante Gunaratana serves as an adviser to ensure that the Trust in maintained using Buddhist principals. Scholarships are available to children of all religions and ethnicities.
